On a cold damp night, everything seemed no different than any other as Bernard swept his long hair to one side out of his many eyes. He was reading a book, mumbling to himself while he laid on his bed. Apple Tart laid across his back, slightly peeking out his shoulder from time to time to observe while drifting in and out of sleep.
The tattered, old looking book consisted of different ways to tend to and care for snekkets, a treasured possession of Bernard’s. He started to drift into the deep dark that is sleep when he heard a loud noise outside, startling both of them. A small squeak left Apple Tart as she hopped down onto the rustic wooden floor in a frenzy. “Who could be here at this hour of the night?” Bernard wondered as he adjusted to get off his green beanbag.
Bernard left his room in a hurry with Apple Tart following closely behind him as they approached his white wooden finished door with a small rectangular window pointing upward on each side. He looked through the peephole to see if there would be anyone or anything awaiting him on the other side. As he put his middle left eye to the hole, a jolt shot up his spine as he started to hastily unlock the door. On the other side of the door was a blue and purple gradient snekket egg inside a greatly woven wooden basket with a giant bright yellowish green bow filled with little goodies to match. They were damp because of the drizzle that was going off and back on every few hours.
He immediately brought the basket inside next to his fireplace and sparked a flame to warm the slightly damp egg. “You poor thing, you could’ve just asked to come in.” Bernard mumbled to himself as he searched the contents of said basket. A tiny bluish pink snekket plushie was the first thing to catch his eye. “Hey Apple, lookie what I got here!” Bernard said, immediately followed by Apple's curious approach. “Here you go, baby.” he said as he cheerfully gave the plush to her gently. Apple then went to her bed and started to cuddle the plush while battling the war that is sleep.
The last thing that Bernard found was a green blanket with white polka dots. “I don’t know who you are, but you know me too well.” he said, chuckling to himself as he laid the blanket around the egg to keep it snug and well warmed. “This is gonna be a looong night.” he muttered as he sat next to the basket to then pull out his book to read so as to not fall into a deep slumber. It seems as if time was at a standstill, until Bernard finally pulled his nose out his book. “Hey Apple, can you watch the egg while I go to the bathroom please?” A noise that can be chalked up to Apple stretching was heard until a big light green head rears its head out from his bedroom with the tiny plush in her mouth.
Apple grumbles to Bernard for waking her as she plumped her butt next to the egg-filled basket. “Thank you, I promise to make it up to you.” Bernard says, making his way into the bathroom. The walls are lined with a lightish green paint almost identical to the fur of Apple with a white finish. A dark wooden counter with a light marble top sits underneath a huge mirror for himself. The shower as well is white with lots of bottles of hair products to keep his hair spick and span. He washes his claws in the marble sink that sat above his counter. Bernard then splashed some water in his face to fight the encroaching restlessness rapidly approaching him. “Yep, long night indeed.”
He exited the washroom to be greeted by Apple happily sitting with a ball in front of her, whilst edging Bernard to play. “You sure, what about the egg, Apple?” he asked while looking toward the direction of the basket. Apple then also turned their head toward the basket then back to Bernard. Apple, then left with no other choice, had to pull out her trump card. She tilted her head and started to use her ultimate move, her puppy dog eyes. “No… don't do this.” Bernard exclaimed as he started to look away from Apple. She started to pout and increase the tilt of her head by a couple degrees and widen her stare. “Fine, fine… there is no getting around you is there.” he sighs as he picks up the ball to throw. “You ready and go fetch!” Bernard says as he tosses the ball with Apple. This goes on for a good amount of the night until the sun starts to rise.
Bernard, with little sleep, is startled awake by the alarm clock on his nightstand next to his beanbag. “Well, I guess it’s time for work already.” he moans as he picks himself up off of the floor next to the basket. He checks to see if anything happened to the defenseless egg while he was dreaming. Nothing seemed to be wrong so he went through his morning routine of getting ready for work and feeding Apple her food for the morning. Bernard grabs his bag full of treats for the snekkets he will be training from his kitchen as well as an energy beverage for himself knowing he will probably need it. He grabbed the mystery egg in the basket and started to head out the door with Apple energetically following along.
Bernard sluggishly walks toward work while waving to neighbors and friends who all pass. Apple gliding closely behind not to be in his but close enough to basically be touching. They finally reach their destination of Bernard’s workplace, which is a boarding house for snekkets. He opens the door, being greeted by lots of chirps and squeaks from all of the other snekkets being boarded there. He walks into his office while Apple greets the other snekkets back. He sets the egg down by a heater, and mutters to himself, “ Another day, another snekket.” as he sits back in his chair.
