DARLING NEEDS SOME HELP WITH HER CROPS, HOW DO YOU HELP HER OUT?
---
"Ello there good fella! Are you able to lend me a hand? I have too much land and too few nubs to work on it! Perhaps we could do some work together? I'd be happy to share a field with you!"
Darling's voice rang out to Idris as he passed by, bag in tow. He was a fairly busy paca, and didn't like getting his nubs too dirty, but he couldn't turn down another paca in need. Darling seemed so friendly, too, and having a field could be a neat little business venture. After a bit of self-convincing, he gave a brisk nod. "Sure!" As he toddled over to where Darling was waiting for him, he shed his bag, setting it next to a small shed.
"Hope you're ready for some honest work, fella." The mottled-feelered Paca announced as she retrieved a hoe and multiple bags of seeds from the garden shed Idris had set his bag next to. "I'll do the tillin', you can follow 'long behind and sow the seeds, sound good t' you?"
In honesty, Idris would've rather done the hoeing, maybe it would have been more work to swing around the thing, but at least he wouldn't have to get his nubs dirty. "Uh-sure.. Do you have gloves?" It was a long shot- but he had to ask. "I'd prefer not to get my nubs too dirty."
The farmhand gave a hearty chuckle as she scuttled back into the shed, "Sure thing, gimme just a minute." Loud clattering noises were heard inside the shed as Darling rustled around, finding an old pair of working gloves and handing them over to Idris. The smaller paca accepted them gratefully with a timidly-voiced "Thank you," as he put them on.
"If you're all set, we can get to work!"
Idris nodded, padding after Darling as she started out into the fields.
The tilling and sowing of the land took all morning and all afternoon, the sun beating down on them all the while.
While the sun was still high in the sky, the larger pacapillar had set down her hoe and turned towards Idris. "You wanna take a break lil guy?" She asked, noting his exhaustion.
The smaller pacapillar was worn out and they weren't even halfway done with the field yet. "I'd like that." He huffed, seeming relieved that they got a break. "There's a bucket by the well if ya want some water. I'll keep hoein'. You can take your break and catch up to me after."
Idris jumped up, "No way!" He wasn't about to fall behind. "I'm not just going to let you get ahead of me." As he took it as a challenge, they moved faster through the seeding process and eventually Darling stopped once again. "Alright. I'm takin a break, you're welcome to join me." She offered, seeing how the work continued to wear on the inexperienced paca. "C'mon. Let's get y' some water, fella."
He was too tired to do much else but nod as he followed after Darling, popping off the work gloves and massaging his sore nubs as he relaxed and seemingly melted into the floor before the other got back. An amused smile crossed Darling's face as she offered the smaller some water.
"Here ya go fella." She said, stepping back to let Idris drink. He did- happily, gulping down the liquid as though it were the only time he'd ever tasted water in his life. "Thanks." He breathed, sitting up properly again and stretching himself out. The pair of hard-working pacapillars relaxed for a while, idly chatting about things, Darling took Idris through the shed and showed him some of the seeds she worked with, introducing him to each type and what they were. He was interested, of course, but farming seemed like too much dirty work for him. It was hard, and after this experience, he'd appreciate the farmers in his life a little bit more.
When their break ended, Idris was feeling a lot better already, slipping his working gloves on and slipping into the booties that Darling had retrieved from the shed as well. Though it was a little late for them as his back ungloved nubs were already caked with dirt from the disturbed soil, he appreciated the gesture nonetheless. "I'm ready to get back to work!" He announced, grabbing one of the seed bags to emphasize it. "Energetic one, aren't'cha?" Darling couldn't help but smile, finding the clearly-inexperienced Idris endearing. "Alright! Let's get back to it!"
With their short time off, the two newly refreshed pacas worked until sundown, cheerily conversing the entire time. Idris found Darling's work incredibly interesting, enjoying hearing about the different types of plants and how their harvests worked- the literal seeds he was helping sow would feed a numerous amount of pacas and Darling wouldn't have been able to do it without his help. That made him feel special, and he could understand why so many pacas chose the farming profession. It endowed him with a new sense of respect and appreciation for the farmers in his life, and now, that included himself. As they finished their work, the sun was setting in the sky, and while Darling was packing up the leftover seeds, Idris approached with his work boots and gloves. "Thanks for lending these to me." He said- assuming he wasn't allowed to keep them for himself, they had just been borrowed, of course. Darling smiled, gently taking the boots and gloves from Idris before picking up the bad he'd left on the ground and placing them in there. "Why don't you keep 'em?" She offered, placing the bag around Idris' again. "You're farmin' with me now, wouldn't wanna get those nubs dirty, would ya?" The gratitude in Idris' expression said more than he could express, and the gift meant more than that to him. It was a symbol of their time together today. "Thank you." He said as he secured the bag around him before starting off towards home.
"Take care now!" Darling called after him, waving goodbye with a nub.
"I will!" Idris turned to call back, starting back towards his home . The next time he did any sowing, he'd surely remember Darling and her farm.
